i have been really spoiled by the new generation of sdr-based transceivers... i dumped nearly all of boat anchors and now mostly run qrp (using a 705, ctx-10, or tx-500)... however, since yazoo hasn't really updated its ft-817 design in 20 years, even with the ft-818, and outboard audio filter can come in handy15-20 years ago when dsp started appearing in the hobby, most filtering sounded awful... i was very disappointed by yaesu and kenwood, and even sgc, whose adsp1 was better than its 'improved' adsp2fast forward, and your options are limited... the jsp nir 10 or 12 are still the best ever made, but now rarer on the used market... other filters from mighty fine junk are still around, but thanks to Brandon, much more expensive... all are big and clunky; also sotabeams offerings and bhi are more compact but expensivethis filter unit is the best deal, hands down... prices seem to be all over the place due to offshore sellers not having a clue as to how much to gouge consumers here... find the cheapest one... they are all the same... these are for hams... and feature ssb and cw filters, 10 levels of noise reduction, and qso recording... details and schematics are, excuse the pun, sketchy, but operation is simple, and the filter should run for quite some time on a fresh set of AAsi usually run mag loops for /p operation, but with this filter my ft-818 will make listening much more comfortable
